Highlights of reports received July 10 through July 17 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include AMERICAN AVOCET, WILLET, BLACK
VULTURE, and RED-HEADED WDPKRS.
From the Lake Erie shore in Chautauqua County, another occurrence of
AMERICAN AVOCETS at Dunkirk Harbor. July 13, 4 AMERICAN AVOCETS plus 2
rare WILLETS at the Main Street beach, and later, nearby at the foot
of Roberts Road. There have been no other reports since the 13th.
July 14, also in Chautauqua County, a flyby BLACK VULTURE over the
Village of Mayville on Chautauqua Lake.
Several reports this week of RED-HEADED WDPKRS., listed as a Species
of Concern by the New York State DEC. One RED-
HEADED WDPKR. at a peanut feeder in Orchard Park. Another single
RED-HEADED WDPKR on Emery Road in South Wales. Three adults and one
young at Point Gratiot Park in Dunkirk. At the mouth of Silver Creek
in the Town of Hanover, 2 adults and 2 young. And in Ontario,
RED-HEADED WDPKR. at the foot of Kraft Road in Fort Erie.
The CLIFF SWALLOW colony continues this year on Tonawanda Island in
the City of North Tonawanda. 35 CLIFF SWALLOWS about the island, and
89 nests counted on the two towers.
July 15, shorebirds on the north shore of Lake Erie at Rock Point
Park in Dunnville, Ontario, included LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER, with 1150
D.-CREST. CORMORANTS, 5 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 6 CASPIAN TERNS and 105
COMMON TERNS. Nearby at the Mosaic Ponds on Rymer Road, GREATER
YELLOWLEGS and 2 SHORT-
B. DOWITCHERS.
Genesee County reports this week - 2 BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS and 2
LEAST SANDPIPERS in the swamp on Gilhooley Road in the Town of
Alexander. In private woods on Francis Road in Bethany, 8 pairs of
WOOD THRUSHES and 4 pairs of SCARLET TANAGERS.
At the Carlton Hill Area in the Wyoming County Town of Middlebury
this week, 50 species included 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 13 EASTERN
KINGBIRDS, 25 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 19 EASTERN TOWHEES and 17
BOBOLINKS, plus WILLOW FLYCATCHER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, HORNED LARK,
VESPER SPARROW and EASTERN MEADOWLARK.
Other reports this week - at the Meadows Road State Land in the
Chautauqua County Town of Arkwright, 2 COMMON RAVENS, BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, RED-BR. NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER, WOOD THRUSH, YELLOW-R.
WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, DARK-EYED JUNCO and ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK.
And on the upper Niagara River, at the Motor Island heronry, 89 GREAT
EGRETS, including 49 EGRETS arriving after sunset.
