Highlights of reports received July 31 through August 7 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-W. CROSSBILL and
PINE SISKIN.
CROSSBILLS have piqued birders attention in recent weeks. Flocks of
RED CROSSBILLS have been reported in Orchard Park and in the Lake
Ontario Plains in the past two weeks. Several days this week, RED
CROSSBILLS in a breeding area in Allegany County's Town of West
Almond, on North Road and Palmer's Pond Road. Also, a flyover WHITE-W.
CROSSBILL, plus BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and warblers - NASHVILLE WARBLER,
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, AMERICAN
REDSTART, MOURNING WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and HOODED WARBLER.
Also in Allegany County, COMMON RAVEN on Route 48 in Amity.
August 2, a PINE SISKIN, rare in summer, at a feeder in the Village
of East Aurora.
In Buffalo, August 1, 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were heard migrating over
Shirley Avenue before sunrise.
August 2 at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, counts of common
summer species were topped by 24 HOUSE WRENS, 10 MARSH WRENS, 33 GRAY
CATBIRDS, 39 YELLOW WARBLERS and 19 SONG SPARROWS, plus WOOD DUCK,
AMERICAN WIGEON, HOODED MERGANSER, PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT EGRET,
GREEN HERON, BL.-
CR. NIGHT-HERON and VIRGINIA RAIL, and in the parking lot, a
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD.
BALD EAGLES this week - 3 sub-adults at Saint Columbans in Sheridan.
Juvenile BALD EAGLE at Guinlock Pond, in the Wyoming County Town of
Attica, where there were two nearby eagle nestings this summer. And an
adult BALD EAGLE over the Town of Concord in southern Erie County.
Also this week - In a Williamsville yard, 2 unexpected FIELD
SPARROWS, with 2 RED-BR. NUTHATCHES and 6 each of BALTIMORE ORIOLE and
PURPLE FINCH. In Chautauqua County, COMMON RAVEN and BLUE-HEADED VIREO
at the Meadows Road State Land in Arkwright. And at Delaware Park in
Buffalo, 3 GR. CR. FLYCATCHERS.
