Highlights of reports received August 7 through August 14 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include WHITE-WINGED DOVE, RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE, LA. WATERTHRUSH, and a reported EVENING GROSBEAK.
From Saint Catharines, Ontario, August 13, a WHITE-WINGED DOVE in a
yard on Missisauga Road. WHITE-WINGED DOVE is a tropical species with
a history of vagrancy across North America. August 9, a SPOTTED DOVE
was photographed in a yard in the Town of Amherst - most likely an
escaped individual.
August 12 in Fort Erie, Ontario, an early RED-NECKED PHALAROPE,
juvenile, on the east side of Buffalo Road. Other shorebirds in the
region - at Dunkirk Harbor, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER,
SANDERLING, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER, plus 14 CASPIAN
TERNS. On Wentworth Road in the Chautauqua County Town of Villanova, 7
WILSON'S SNIPE and 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS.
August 9 at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, a late singing LA.
WATERTHRUSH. Also, a flyover PURPLE MARTIN.
In North Tonawanda, August 13, a reported EVENING GROSBEAK, female,
on Doebler Road. More details of this very rare summer species would
be appreciated.
A small number of RED CROSSBILLS again this week in Allegany County,
near Palmer's Pond in the Town of West Almond.
August 10, a PEREGRINE FALCON in North Buffalo, perched in a tree on
Grove Street, north of Hertel Avenue. A single COMMON NIGHTHAWK also
in the Grove Street neighborhood for the past month.
Chautauqua County was loaded up with BALD EAGLES this past week. A
total of 22 EAGLES including 16 juveniles and 6 adults. Eleven at
Saint Columbans on Route 5 in Sheridan. Four at the mouth of Silver
Creek. Two at Cattaraugus Creek in Hanover, and 5 EAGLES in Dunkirk at
the Harbor and Point Gratiot. In Erie County, an adult BALD EAGLE over
Route 5 in the Town of Evans.
And, at the Meadows Road State Land in the Town of Arkwright, YELLOW
WARBLER, CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER, BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., AMERICAN REDSTART,
MOURNING WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and HOODED WARBLER, plus
BLUE-HEADED VIREO and 2 SCARLET TANAGERS.
