The past two days have been very good at Van Wagners Beach in Hamilton for pelagic lake watching given the moderate E to NE winds. Today just before 1:00 pm, myself and several others had a close in juvenile Sabine's Gull. Another one was seen later in the afternoon by others. Five jaegers were seen on Tuesday, including two juvenile Long-taileds (one which flew inland over the beach) and two adult Parasitics. Today, another five jaegers were seen including another juv. Long-tailed. Other birds of note included 15 phalaropes yesterday (too distant to ID for certain but likely mostly Red-neckeds), two Black Terns today, White-winged Scoter, numbers of Green-winged Teal and Sanderling.
Directions: To reach Van Wagners Beach, take the Centennial Parkway (Hwy. 20) exit from the QEW in east Hamilton and proceed north to the North Service Rd., turn left and continue west as it turns into Van Wagners Road. Continue to the parking lots at either Hutch's Restaurant or the Lakeland Centre viewing tower and view the lake anywhere near here. Best conditions are on easterly winds. Rob Dobos Dundas, Ont.
