in the mid-afternoon Hugh Curry saw 3 CACKLING GEESE at Sobey's Pond--in front
of the Sobey's Warehouses on the north side of Victoria St., west of the
Iroquois Sports Complex.
Medium to strong N/NW winds and a rising BP brought at least 35 observers to
help with the raptor count over a period of 6.5 hours. I THANK EVERYBODY FOR
THEIR GREAT CONTRIBUTION.
CRANBERRY MARSH RAPTOR WATCH, sw Whitby, ON
Sunday, Sep.28/08
Observation time: 0800-1430EST
Coordinator: Doug Lockrey
Official Counters: Doug Lockrey,Rayfield Pye
Observers: Jean Iron, Hugh Curry, Jerry Ball, Greg Stuart, Craig McLauchlan,
Joyce Collier-Brown, Lou Root (Rochester,NY), Paul McGee, Norm Schipper, Jack
Toker, Charlie Adey, Karl Jennewein, Rosemary Harris, Julie Berger, Janice
Melendez, AND many others who arrived as I took a short respite.
The weather---medium/strong N/NW winds, rising BP; 19C. The Thermal Updraft
Velocity was given as 0, but many of the raptors were certainly riding on
thermals.
The migrating hawks were coming in on 3 fronts, keeping us very much alert. It
was a pleasure to listen to my many observers calling out the features that
dictated the identifications. KESTRELS AND SHARP-SHINNEDS WERE MOVING THROUGH
RAPIDLY. (see table below)
Non-raptors- thousands of MIGRATING BLUE JAYS;
along the path--yellow-bellied sapsucker, SCARLET TANAGER, rose-breasted
grosbeak;
in the wetland--swamp sparrow, marsh wren, 1 r-t hummingbird, black ducks,
gadwalls, pintails, greater scaup AND leopard frogs
on the lake--108 common loons (various ages), HORNED GREBE, 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK
