CRANBERRY MARSH RAPTOR WATCH, sw Whitby, ON
Sun.,Nov.2/08

Observation time: 0900-1400
Coordinator: Doug Lockrey
Official Counters:Doug Lockrey,Greg Stuart
Observers: Rayfield Pye, Brian Steele, Greg Stuart, Jim McKnight, Charlie
Adey, Jim Munroe, Rosemary Harris, Ron Stephenson, many visitors, Frank Butson
and 4 confreres from the ROSETTA McCLAIN RW in Scarborough.

Weather conditions-- medium NNE wind(becoming E by mid-day), rising/then
falling BP, TUV=2, 4C; 5% cloud-cover

The north-easterly winds carried most of the migrating hawks directly north off
Thickson Pt., hence at considerable distance from our platform. The keen eyes
of Brian, Rayfield and Stuart were major contributing factors to seeing a good
number of Red-tailed Hawks (see table below). We were happy to have Frank and
his crew from Rosetta McClain to help us. It was cold and blustery at times.

At 1110 a wonderful grey ghost spectacle came rapidly very low right across the
wetland, through our perched owl, and on westward. Many photos were taken of
this immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
After many people had left a wide wingspanned raptor appeared over the north
edge of the wetland--I do not recall any flapping as this adult GOLDEN EAGLE
moved through.
At 0915 an adult PEREGRINE FALCON (a resident) perched in a willow tree.

Among non-raptors--pine siskins, both kinglets, yellow-rumped warbler.
