Hello All,
On November 1, at 0230AM, a hatch-year, female, Boreal Owl was banded at the
extreme eastern Tip of Long Point during the standard Northern Saw-whet Owl
monitoring program of the Long Point Bird Observatory(LPBO). The bird was
released and has not been relocated since. This powerhouse of an owl was found
in a net by Joe Cockram of Great Britain and was also enjoyed by Ross Wood
(Burlington, Ontario), Matt Slaymaker(Great Britain), Colin Wooley (Oregon,
USA), and myself.
Later that day, at 1715, Ross and I stumbled upon a hatch-year, probable
female, Common Ground Dove in a remote area of Long Point. The bird was
observed for about 10 minutes as it made its way through the marram dune
grasses and disappeared into an abyss of fragmites. It has not been relocated
since.
Both of these records will be firsts for the Long Point area if accepted by the
OBRC!
Photos of both species will be posted on the next LPBO sightings board update -
www.birdscanada.org/longpoint
In other bird news there have been some fantastic movements recently of winter
finches(thousands of siskins, and hundreds of white-winged crossbills), robins,
bluebirds, and pipits. On November 2nd over 10,000 Ruddy Ducks were staging
along Long Points southern shore. For more details please refer to the
sightings board.
Good luck with the Cave Swallows later in the week...

Friendly Reminder: Access to Long Point east of the Long Point Provincial Park
