At 8:30 am, Monday November 24, 2008 this is Chris Lewis reporting.
A good variety of species were reported over the past week. Back on the 17th
over 18,000 Snow Geese were seen in fields east of Casselman and smaller
numbers were reported during the week from several areas around Ottawa.
Among the Canada Geese in the Moodie Dr. and Barnsdale Rd. area on the 20th
were 6 Cackling Geese. A male CANVASBACK first reported from the Ottawa
River at Deschenes, Quebec, on the 12th was still present as of at least the
17th and a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has apparently taken up a favourite
wintering location on the Rideau River between the Hurdman bridge and
Riverain Park.
A couple of ventures to the Eardley escarpment in Gatineau Park on the 19th
and 20th were productive for raptors - a few Bald Eagles, a late juvenile
Red-shouldered Hawk and an adult Golden Eagle were noteworthy. The Ottawa
River at Andrew Haydon Park and the Moodie Dr. quarry pond both hosted a
good variety of gulls including a 1st winter Thayer's Gull as well as
several Iceland, Lesser Black-backed and Glaucous Gulls. Snowy Owls were
reported from at least 3 different locations since the 21st and a NORTHERN
HAWK OWL discovered near Saint-Francois-de-Masham in Quebec on the 19th was
still present and actively hunting on the 20th.
Since mid October there have been virtually no reports of Northern Shrikes,
however one was spotted on the 23rd along with a Carolina Wren at a backyard
feeder in Carleton Place. A very late male WILSON'S WARBLER popped up among
the rose bushes in a backyard along Rue St-Malo in Aylmer, Quebec, on the
22nd. Many observers reported flocks of Snow Buntings throughout the week, a
feeder on Russell Rd. in Carlsbad Springs hosted a flock of approx. 10
Brown-headed Cowbirds on the 21st, and several small flocks of White-winged
Crossbills were noted in the Eardley-Masham area on the 19th.
