A flock of male and female White-winged Crossbills were observed at Port Burwell Provincial Park today between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. There were at least 30 in the flock at the park headquarter office taking cones from spruce trees there. A smaller flock of about 10 was observed on the trail between parking lot 2 and parking lot 3 in the lower park area.

In addition, we observed:

10 Eastern Bluebirds (lower park area between parking lot 2 and parking lot 3)
1 Common Goldeneye (nearshore off the park beach)
2 Hermit Thrush (on back trail through the upper park)
1 Red-bellied Woodpecker
2 Northern Flicker
8 American Tree Sparrow (lower park board walk area)
6 White-throated Sparrows (on back trail through the upper park)
1 Red-tailed Hawk
1 Northern Harrier
2 Carolina Wren

In addition: many Canada Geese, Mallard Duck, Ring-billed and Herring Gull

Observers were Andy Eveland and Joe Stephenson

Port Burwell is on Lake Erie at the southern terminus of Highway 19 (Planck Road) about 30 miles south of the the 401 where it intersects Highway 19 near Ingersoll. The Provincial Park is on the west side of the town - cross the bridge in the centre of town going in the westerly direction and turn left on Chatham St. towards the park. The park is closed so you have to walk in.
