Hi Birders, After being told several times that there are no Boreals around I persevered and finally found one in the SW section of the Jack Pine plantation. The bird was about 3m up in a Jack Pine.
I am on the island as I type this and found 5 Saw-whets (2 in Pine plantation, nr South end, 2 in line of pines that run to the NE from the plantation and 1 just beyond the feeders). There was also 1 Long-eared near the feeders and several (20+) in the plantation, mostly just in from the central/main entrance to the plantation and to the left a bit. I had a Snowy Owl on Stella Rd on a post on the west side of the road (opposite a maintenance building) and another on the KFN Property. Also, a Short-eared flew over whilst in the plantation and there were 10 along the Marshall Rd (the road into Owl Woods) near North Shore Rd. I had 2 Hermit Thrushes (one in the swampy area, quite close to the Boreal) and one closer to the "main entrance" to the Jack Pines, just to the left after going in where the bulk of the Long-eareds were. Northern Flicker calling near the feeders and a couple of Golden-crowned Kinglets around. And, as mentioned in several previous posts, the vole population is high (I personally saw 5 and many tracks). Many Harriers, Rough-legged & Red-tailed Hawks around too. 29 Tundra Swans at the corner of North Shore Rd and Lower 40 Foot road in the channel between the island and mainland. Flock of 100+ Snow Buntings on the KFN property at the east end of the island and another 16 along Stella Rd. Cheers & good birding, Frank Pinilla Richmond Hill, ON DIRECTIONS: Exit Hwy 401 at km593, head south toward Millhaven, when you hit the lake turn right on Hwy 33 (Bath Rd) and you will see the ferry dock on the left very shortly. The trip leaves the mainland on the half hour and is $8 return trip. There is no gas on the island. When leaving the ferry, turn left at first stop sign (North Shore Rd) and look for an unmaintained & unsigned road (more like a track) - called Marshall Road in the map book - follow it south and park at the S-curve where you will see a trail & sign into the "Owl Woods". Continue along Marshall Rd to get to South Shore Rd. KFN Property can be seen from Lower 40 Foot Rd (the easternmost N-S road on the island). -- Sent from my mobile device _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
