Ontbirders
This is an other semi-annual wakeup call. Owls at well publicized
locations are again at the center. People are alarmed, disturbed and
frustrated.
I ask you to reread and review OFO's Code of Ethics.
http://www.ofo.ca/aboutus/ethics.php
At the core of the Code is respect - respect for the birds and their
welfare; respect for landowners and their property; respect for others
and their enjoyment of their personal passion regardless of equipment
used. That includes both 'birders' and 'photographers'.
Continued lack of respect will result in reduced access, reduced
opportunity and reduced information. That should be enough for any
thoughtful individual to think twice about inappropriate behaviour in
the field.
While it can be very distressing to view bad behaviour in the field,
continued use of this list to promote speculative opinions and agendas
will not be tolerated. Your ability to post directly to Ontbirds will be
restricted. That said if you do observe a problem in the field that you
are unable to resolve, contact your local nature club they should be
able to help. You can also contact the Ontbirds Coordinator (that's me)
I should also be able to help.
Finally a very slight change in topic. I would like to remind everyone
that the purpose of Ontbirds is to alert the birding community of
unexpected birds and patterns with directions so they can be relocated.
Ontbirds is NOT intended to be a forum for the posting of bird pictures.
A post about a known bird should inform us of a change in its current
status, links to photographs should only be considered if there is a
question about the accuracy of the report.
