It pays to keep your eyes open on the train. Yesterday, at about 9:50 am, en
route to Toronto from Windsor on VIA Rail, just as the train was pulling into
the Chatham station, I was surprised to see a lone, immature Sandhill Crane fly
up from the ground just a few metres from the tracks. (Perhaps it was waiting
for the westbound train to Windsor, which of course was sure to be late.) The
bird landed on the snow-covered roof of a nearby building and perched there as
passengers continued to board. A short while later, it flew back down and began
foraging in a small patch of scrub. Clearly, the bird had somehow gotten
separated from a flock. Hope the poor fellow can manage to survive.

Maybe they should call it the Chatham Crane Station . . . .

I had hoped to possibly see a Snowy Owl in a field somewhere, but seeing a
Sandhill Crane this late in the year was very gratifying.

Perhaps I should start keeping a "Train List" . . . .
