Highlights of reports received January 15 through January 22 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include BOHEMIAN WAXWING, PINE GROSBEAK,
EASTERN TOWHEE and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
Two reports of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the Lake Ontario Plains this
week. One BOHEMIAN WAXWING with 30 CEDAR WAXWINGS and a PINE GROSBEAK
at Golden Hill State Park in the Town of Somerset on January 18, and
another single BOHEMIAN WAXWING with a flock of AMERICAN ROBINS,
January 19, at the Route 18 golf course in the Town of Porter.
In Clarence, a rare in winter EASTERN TOWHEE at a feeder for the
past week. Also rare in winter, 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, January 19, on
Meadville Road in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area. And, 4
uncommon RED-W. BLACKBIRDS at Four Mile Creek State Park in Porter.
WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS and PINE SISKINS continue to be widely reported.
WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS reports mainly from the Lake Ontario Plains, but a
flock of 12 still on Straley Avenue in the Town of Cheektowaga. 20 to
30 PINE SISKINS at feeders in Wilson and Williamsville, and lesser
numbers at other locations. And, single COMMON REDPOLLS at feeders in
Clarence and Amherst.
Small numbers of LAPLAND LONGSPURS still among larger flocks of SNOW
BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS across the Lake Ontario Plains and on
Steiner Road in the Town of Newstead. In Somerset, a NORTHERN SHRIKE
on Carmen Road January 19.
Abundant waterfowl packing Dunkirk Harbor this week. January 21,
2672 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1871 GREATER SCAUP and 1187 BUFFLEHEADS, plus
hundreds of REDHEADS, CANVASBACKS and COMMON GOLDENEYES, 3 TUNDRA
SWANS and 14 LESSER SCAUP. Also in the Harbor, 137 HORNED GREBES, 3
LITTLE GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULL, BALD EAGLE and GREAT BLUE HERON.
GREAT BLUE HERON was also reported on a small pond in East Aurora -
GREAT BLUE HERONS are uncommon but regular winter residents, where
open water is available.
Other reports this week - on Lake Ontario off Wilson, 12
RED-THROATED LOONS. RED-NECKED GREBE at the Olcott Pier. Very few
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK reports so far, only in the Cattaraugus County Town
of Dayton and at Saint Columbans in Chautauqua County. PEREGRINE
FALCON along the Robert Moses Parkway at the Lewiston Reservoir. At
Reinstein Woods Park in Cheektowaga, a pair of GREAT HORNED OWLS plus
3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and a passing flock of WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS. And a
YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER continues in a Silver Creek yard.
