Over the past few days, the photo of this gull has been studied and it appears that our Slaty-backed Gull may in fact be a northern race of a Herring Gull that occurs in Newfoundland. I leave the experts to this one but received some flack about not advising the people of the original sighting. As the temperatures are frigid, I wouldn't want birders to stand out in these conditions. It appears that there may be one in Niagara.
