Highlights of reports received January 29 through February 5 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include SPOTTED TOWHEE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE
and KING EIDER.
February 1, the SPOTTED TOWHEE in Port Colborne, Ontario was
reported again in the 700 block of Lakeshore Road East.
February 2, two rare waterfowl, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a female
KING EIDER, at Point Breeze, on Lake Ontario in the Town of Carlton.
This location is the eastern limit of the BOS study area. Also 20
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and a BLACK SCOTER. Elsewhere in Carlton, a large
flock of 500 SNOW BUNTINGS with 40 HORNED LARKS and several LAPLAND
LONGSPURS, on Oak Orchard River Road, west of the Bridges.
Waterfowl remain abundant on the upper Niagara River. The Ontario
Street boat launch in Buffalo's Riverside provides good viewing of the
many diving ducks, plus a pair of BALD EAGLES at Strawberry Island and
gulls including L. BLACK-B. GULL.
From Dunkirk Harbor - in addition to thousands of waterfowl, a few
RED-NECKED GREBES and HORNED GREBE, BALD EAGLES, and LITTLE GULL,
GLAUCOUS GULL and BONAPARTE'S GULL.
Dunkirk Harbor is the only location where BONAPARTE'S GULLS have
been reported recently; at the Dunkirk Airport, the only reports of
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.
On Ellicott Creek in Amherst, at Saint Rita's Lane, next to the
University at Buffalo campus, WOOD DUCK, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK and
GREEN-WINGED TEAL among over 100 MALLARDS.
The highlight in a Williamsville yard this week was a female
OREGON-type DARK-EYED JUNCO, with YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER, NORTHERN
FLICKER, PURPLE FINCH, 12 WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS and 11 PINE SISKINS. In
the Town of Aurora, 30 PINE SISKINS, and at another feeder in Aurora,
16 SNOW BUNTINGS and an EASTERN BLUEBIRD. In Varysburg in Wyoming
County, a mixed flock of 100 PINE SISKINS and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES.
Two COMMON REDPOLLS in Elma, and a single COMMON REDPOLL and 5
WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS in a Hamburg yard.
Also this week - BALD EAGLES continue on the west branch of the
Niagara River and Navy Island off Grand Island. Another BALD EAGLE
over Springville. COMMON RAVEN on Meadows Road in the Town of
Arkwright. Five EASTERN BLUEBIRDS with 10 HORNED LARKS and 100 SNOW
BUNTINGS on Harrison Road in Shelby. Flocks of wintering AMERICAN
ROBINS on the Niagara Parkway in Ontario and in the Town of Elma. And,
an unexpected NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in Springville.
Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, February 12. Please
call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may report sightings
after the tone. Thank you for calling and reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
