Hello All, Today I observed the Great Gray Owl that was reported a few days ago in Holland Landing. It was on Bathurst st. past Queensville Sideroad. I observed it at about 5:00 PM, it was very cooperative and several photographs were taken without coming off of the road (plus, there is a small "moat" filled with water at the roadside, so don't try to cross unless you want to have wet socks!) There was also Great Horned calling in the distance.
*DISCLAIMER* The Owl was near the road, and great photographs were obtained by my point-and-shoot with 18X optical zoom. PLEASE, if anyone that goes to see the Owl also witnesses some inappropriate behavior, send me an e-mail. If I hear of but one instance of baiting or harassing the owl, I will no longer report Owls of any kind, anywhere. Once again, the Owl can readily be seen from the roadside. Don't let this become another case similar to the Orillia Hawk-owl. Directions (as per Ron Fleming): To access the northern extension of Bathurst you have to jog east to Yonge Street and follow it north of Newmarket toward Bradford. Drive past the lights at the main Holland Landing turnoff (there is a Brooklin Concrete property on the east side of the road as well as a hotel) and continue down a long grade to the next set of lights just southeast of Bradford. Turn right onto Bathurst St. N., take a quick left, cross the RR tracks, then follow Bathurst steadily northward. Once you get past Queensville Sdrd. (which runs east into Holland Landing) start looking for big shapes in the trees.
