It has been an excellent year for finches in my backyard in Carleton Place. We have had Pine Siskens for most of the winter with flocks of 30 to 40 at times, but they are now down to a few each day. Redpolls have been present but only for sporadic visits by small groups. The Pine Grosbeaks started arriving around Christmas and there were still as many as 20 feeding off the crabapple tree next door during this last weekend. Also I have heard reports of Wing-winged Crossbills elsewhere in town this winter and finally this morning we had our first one, feeding voraciously on cones that had fallen off the trees. It was an adult female. Finally the Purple Finches are singing up a storm in the trees around the house.

cheers and great birding
