Highlights of reports received March 12 through March 19 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include GOLDEN EAGLE, BLACK VULTURE, KING
EIDER and GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE.
March 13 at the Hamburg Hawkwatch, both GOLDEN EAGLE and BLACK
VULTURE, along with the first 5 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, plus TURKEY
VULTURE, BALD EAGLE, SHARP-SH. HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK,
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and 290 TUNDRA SWANS in six flocks. The daily
hawkwatch is located in Lakeside Memorial Park, off Camp Road in the
Town of Hamburg. Visitors are always welcome.
From Ontario, March 14, a very rare, near adult plumage male KING
EIDER among WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, on Lake Ontario at Victoria Avenue
in Vineland, Ontario.
Twenty one waterfowl species in the Iroquois Refuge, Oak Orchard
Wildlife Management Area and Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area on
March 15. Highlighted by 8 GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE on Windmill Marsh in
the Oak Orchard Area, seen by telescope from the Albion Road tower.
Also at Windmill Marsh, 6 CACKLING GEESE, L. BLACK-B. GULL, first
report of TREE SWALLOW, and a PINE SISKIN. At Ringneck Marsh in the
Iroquois Refuge, 5 more CACKLING GEESE, ICELAND GULL and L. BLACK-B.
GULL. In the Tonawanda Area at Ruddy Marsh, abundant AMERICAN WIGEON
and RING-NECKED DUCKS. And on the 13th at Kumpf Marsh in the Iroquois
Refuge, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES and 2 L. BLACK-B. GULLS.
Not all SNOW GEESE are in Central New York this week - 8 over Main
Street in Buffalo, and 2 at both Windmill Marsh and in the Town of
Porter.
First reports - AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, heard in the early morning
March 16 on Grand Island, on Long Road and on Bedell Road. WILSON'S
SNIPE, March 18, at the Dunkirk Airport. And EASTERN MEADOWLARKS and
abundant SONG SPARROWS at several locations.
Still more reports of WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS. Small numbers in the
University District in Buffalo, Amherst State Park, Saint Columbans
property in the Town of Sheridan, and at a feeder in the Town of
Wilson, along with PURPLE FINCH, HOUSE FINCH, COMMON REDPOLL and PINE
SISKIN.
Other reports this week - BALD EAGLES on nest at Cayuga Pool in the
Iroquois Refuge and in Silver Creek. Migrant BALD EAGLE over the Town
of Wheatfield. Nest building COOPER'S HAWKS in Eggerstville in
Amherst. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS near the new nest box on the Winspear
Avenue chimney on the UB Main Street campus. Up to five WOOD DUCKS on
Ruie Road in North Tonawanda. And, SNOWY OWL still at the Niagara
Falls Airport, seen from the Calspan parking lot.
