Hi all,
Further to Geoff Carpentier's recent report of siskins picking up nest lining
material at Thickson's Woods, I've managed to confirm a nesting in the Rothwell
Heights area of Ottawa today. I heard one siskin calling (typical shrill notes)
from up high in a spruce. Then, from very low in a nearby spruce, I heard a
distinct plaintive call –definitely another siskin, but a call I’ve never heard
before. The call was coming from within the foliage down low (7 ft. height)
where there are no cones to feed on. Lo-and-behold, there was a female siskin
on a nest. The nest is formed of spruce twigs and the visible lining is pine
needles. Photo sent to OFO Photos page.
Cheers,
Justin Peter
