Please excuse the tardiness
On 31 March, Dave Moore, Cliff Hodder and I visited Pigeon, Snake and
Salmon Islands by boat, 3-10 miles sw offshore from Kingston. We flushed
1 Snowy Owl from Pigeon Island, 3 Snowies from Snake Island and 2 from
Salmon. There were no Herring Gulls on any of the islands (though they
nest there) but each island had gulls sitting in the water 200-300m
offshore. We found one freshly killed, decapitated and eaten Ring-billed
Gull on Snake Island. While we worked on the islands, having flushed the
owls from them, the gulls came and some alighted on the islands while we
were there. Would/could the continued presence of gthe owls on the
islands significantly delay...or postpone...nest building and egg-laying
?

Directions: From Hwy 401 at Kingston, take the Sir John A. McDonald
Expressway south to King St., turn right, go to next stop light, turn
left, go into Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. Go to lake Ontario shore, look
to SW. Snake is just visible in the distance.
