Highlights of reports received April 2 through April 9 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include BLACK-HEADED GULL, EURASIAN WIGEON and
CASPIAN TERNS.
April 5 on the lower Niagara River, an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL,
first spotted passing the Lewiston Docks, and refound off Artpark
State Park, also in Lewiston; seen from the parking lot at the hiking
trails. Also on the lower river, 8 LITTLE GULLS, 2 ICELAND GULLS and
numbers of BONAPARTE'S GULLS and LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
EURASIAN WIGEON was found April 4 and 5 at Cayuga Pool in the
Iroquois Refuge. An early COMMON MOORHEN at Cayuga Pool on the 5th and
a total of 19 waterfowl species. April 9, an early SORA heard by the
bike path at Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island.
April 7 at Dunkirk Harbor, first report of 5 CASPIAN TERNS, plus
GREAT EGRET and 288 RED-BR. MERGANSERS. On the 8th, 112 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS at Dunkirk and 700 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Barcelona Harbor, in the
Town of Ripley.
During the past week, 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS in the Town of Darien, seen
near sunset on the roads northwest of Darien Lakes State Park. Also
NORTHERN HARRIER and EASTERN MEADOWLARK in Darien.
VESPER SPARROW - first report April 5 on Hulbert Road in the Town of
Wilson. Other sparrows this week - CHIPPING SPARROW at several feeders
and locations, FOX SPARROW at Forest Lawn in Buffalo and at four other
locations, SWAMP SPARROW on ditch Road in the Tonawanda Wildlife
Management Area and 2 FIELD SPARROWS in the Town of Alexander.
April 2, in the Lake Ontario Plains, 2 SANDHILL CRANES, 60 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS and numbers of AMERICAN PIPITS over Marshall Road in the
Town of Yates. On Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road north of Route 18,
39 SNOW GEESE and 5 CACKLING GEESE. April 5 on Lake Ontario at Wilson,
2 SURF SCOTERS, 105 RED-THROATED LOONS, 3 COMMON LOONS, 12 RED-
NECKED GREBES and GLAUCOUS GULL.
Other reports - 3 COMMON LOONS on the Countryside Gravel Ponds and
100 AMERICAN PIPITS on Route 322 in the Town of Dayton in Cattaraugus
County. Single COMMON LOON over the Town of Tonawanda. At least 20
GREAT EGRETS on Motor Island in the upper Niagara River. Several
reports of AMERICAN WOODCOCK, WILSON'S SNIPE and YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER.
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS throughout the Iroquois Refuge and Tonawanda
Wildlife Management Area, and a single RUSTY BLACKBIRD at a feeder on
Grand Island. Other feeder reports included PINE SISKINS, PURPLE
FINCHES and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS.
