Spent an hour in Palgrave Conservation Area this morning. At the marsh adjacent
to the seasonal road at the end of Duffy's Lane, a Broad-winged Hawk flew low
overhead at 10.25 am. Later an adult Red-shouldered Hawk performed a display
flight high above the marsh. A male purple Finch sang from a perch and there
were many Golden-crowned Kinglets, a Brown Creeper, Eastern Phoebe and
White-breasted Nuthatch.
The local works dept. seems determined to drain this marsh completely
as they did 3 years ago ! This so a few vehicles can use the road as a
short-cut and a garbage dump. This in a Conservation Area !
More species recorded were Pileated Woodpecker, drumming Ruffed Grouse,
Siskins, Goldfinch and Song Sparrow among others.
Directions To reach Palgrave C.A., go north from Bolton on # 50. Turn west at
Patterson Sideroad as you enter Palgrave village. After about 2 kms, turn north
on Duffy's Lane. Drive to the end.
