At a feeder in my back yard, as I type this, is a predominantly greenish yellow
finch, size and shape of a House Finch, with a band on the left leg.
Substantially bigger than nearby Siskins.
The breast and rump of the bird are uniform greenish yellow, quite bright. The
back is brown, heavily streaked with darker brown, but with some yellow
feathers. The head has a yellowish wash, but there is no eye-stripe as such.
The big finchy bill is pale, even pinkish, as are the legs.
Peculiarity: the slightly notched tail is pure white, except for the outer
tips, which are black. Presumably a partial albino.
The band is red, and bears a number. I think it's 74.
I tried to photgraph the thing, but my skills are limited.
I suppose it's a yellow form House Finch, but there are differences from the
portrait in Sibley (p. 529).
I'm at 83 Balmoral, between Yonge and St. Claire, and you're welcome to have a
look. Just walk around to the back.
Bob
