Yesterday morning (July 11) at about 10:00AM I heard a Cuckoo calling, right on the property at Rock Pine Resort Cottages, where we stay for the summer.

It was easily found near the top of a small Red Oak tree, about 25 feet up. I watched it with binoculars for abour 20 minutes, as it moved around within the tree.

To my surprise, it was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. I have never seen one in that area in over 20 years of birding. Pointe au Baril must be near the northern limit of its range. Black-billed Cuckoos are more common - I see about one per year.

On June 27 I saw (fleeting) and heard a cuckoo in a swampy area about 1/2 mile from the cottage. It responded when I played the Black-billed Cuckoo call on my car CD player, and I assumed it was a Black-billed. Was this the same bird? Anyone want to venture an opinion? Please reply to me privately.

Pointe au Baril is 40 km north of Parry Sound on Highway 69. Rock Pine Resort Cottages is 4 km west of Pointe au Baril, on Georgian Bay. I see about 70 species in the area each summer.

(I do not have email at the cottage, and will only be in Toronto for 2 days to see any replies.)
