Greetings: The shorebirds are starting their "stopover" at the wetland. Today we have had (Maureen Riggs) - Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Short-billed Dowitcher and a Solitary Sandpiper. Tiny told me that there had been a few Least Sandpipers Friday evening.
Today Hunter and Junior took to the air - magnificent. I think they have been up when we weren't looking. They are accomplished at soaring but do head back to the nest after a short flight time. Tiny has watched George and Gracie bringing a continual supply food to the nest. Once their flying is better I am sure that "fishing" will be the next lesson. Unfortunately, the wetland is not deep enough to offer a supply of fish so we will not be able to experience their fishing lessons. While the Osprey were doing the aerobatics, Virginia Rail chicks were scurrying from the north cell to the south cell. They may be small but they sure can move fast. I had a chance to observe a Moorhen chick with an adult. Very nice indeed, the chick was about 75% the size of the adult. I will report all the "babies" raise in the Wetland this year at a later date. Two new visitors to the Wetland (Ron and Carol - Toronto) were "mesmerized". They totally enjoyed there visit and meeting Tiny. Once again, I thank Tiny and the Town of Brighton for letting us experience the Constructed Wetland. The wetland will be open Sundays between 9:00 and 11:00am until further notice. The wetland is located exactly 7.2 kilometres from were exit 509 off the 401 eastbound meets Highway 30, south. Following Highway 30 right through town. The wetland is located on the SE corner of County Road 64 as you are leaving Brighton. Enjoy!!!
