Hello Ontbirders

Today John Nishikawa, Kevin Seymour, Greg Stuart and I went down to Rock Point Provincial Park in search of Shorebirds. On the rocky (fossil) beach we found one group of shorebirds near the east end, and a few individuals scattered along the beach. The highlight was four WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Also seen, 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE, a few LEAST SANDPIPERS, including 3 juveniles, many SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPERS, one SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a few SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and KILDEER. On the sod farms northeast of the park we found 1 field with a flock of about 20 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, more KILLDEER, and a few HORNED LARKS scattered around.

Directions:
Rock Point Provincial Park (entrance fee) is on the north shore of Lake Erie south of Dunnville. From Dunnville follow Regional Rd 3 south. Turn right on Rymer Road, left on Downey Rd, right on Niece Rd. (The route is well signed with Provinical Park signs). Once in the park ask for a map and directions to the lookout over the fossil beach. Follow the trail from the lookout down to the beach. To reach the sod farms, continue east on Regional Rd 3 from Dunnville or Rock Point. In Lowbanks turn left on Hutchinson Rd (The 2000 MapArt mapbook calls this Boulton Ditch Rd but it is signed Hutchinson Rd). Follow along as the road jogs left then right. Turn right on Poth Rd. Along Poth Road are several sod farms worth checking, although today we did not find plovers there. At the T intersection turn left. We saw the Black-bellied Plovers on a sod farm a short distance north along the east side of this road.

Good luck and good birding.
