At 7:00 am, Monday August 17, 2009 this is Chris Lewis reporting.
The local birding scene has been rather static for the past week or so,
however there were a few new arrivals including GREAT EGRETS, some
shorebirds, a couple of CASPIAN TERNS... and finally some summer weather!
The lone BRANT first reported at Andrew Haydon Park on July 10th was still
feeding here with the CANADA GEESE on August 16th, and a couple of COMMON
GOLDENEYE were among the ducks at the St. Albert lagoons on the 13th. On the
11th a WILD TURKEY and her brood were spotted for the 3rd time in the past
month along Hwy 417 west of Devine Rd.
GREAT EGRET sightings included two at the Embrun lagoons on the 8th, three
at one of the boardwalks along the Jack Pine Trail in the Stony Swamp on the
9th, and one in the stormwater ponds at Eagleson and Fernbank Rds. on the
16th. None of these birds were reported as having leg bands. MERLINS were
out and about in several locations including the Embrun lagoons and a yard
in Kanata on the Ontario side, and at Deschenes as well as Therien Rd. near
Luskville on the Quebec side.
Among mostly KILLDEER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS at the eastern lagoons and the
Eagleson/Fernbank ponds since the 5th, a few GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY,
SEMIPALMATED, LEAST and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were noted. A RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE was at the Casselman lagoons on the 13th and two SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS were at the Eagleson/Fernbank ponds on the 16th. Back on the 6th
the Moodie Dr. quarry pond hosted four BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and more recently
on the 16th two CASPIAN TERNS were reported from River Rd. east of Hwy 416
near Lannin Lane. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew over Aylmer, Quebec on the 11th and
a congregation of several hundred SWALLOW spp. was noted on the 13th at the
Embrun sewage lagoons.
Thank you - Good Birding!
