The Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (HBMO) has a paid position open for
a Hawk Counter for this Fall's migration season from September 1 - November
30, 2009. HBMO is a non-profit volunteer organization with activities
focused on the fall migration of raptors and other avian species that
migrate through southwestern Ontario at Holiday Beach Conservation Area,
near Amherstburg, Ontario. The HBMO manages a raptor count from a 12 metre
(40 foot) tower, a passerine banding station, a raptor banding station, and
a Saw-whet Owl banding program.

 

Duties: Count raptors and other avian species using established protocols
ten hours per day Monday - Friday. Record hourly sightings and weather on
standardized data sheets. Enter daily data into electronic data base of the
Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA). Work with volunteers,
participate in Hawk Festival activities, and assist with public education
activities.

 

Skills: Previous hawk counting experience; fundamental ability to identify
other avian species by sight and/or sound; familiarity with computer usage.
The Candidate will be HBMO's frontline ambassador to the public, and as such
must have public speaking skills in order to interact with visitors and
scheduled school groups. Must be self-motivated; work independently and
enthusiastically; and be in good physical condition to climb the hawk tower
and work outside in all weather.

 

Applicant must provide: own transportation; be able to work in Canada;
binoculars; spotting scope and tripod; bedding; clothing and food.

 

HBMO to provide: 5.2 metre (17 foot) hardtop trailer with one bunk and stove
located at Holiday Beach Conservation Area. Campsite has washrooms and
showers.

 

Stipend: The wage for this position is US$800 - $1,500 per month, dependent
on experience.
