This morning I did a tour of the sod-farm area north of Beeton. The highlight was a Buff-breasted sandpiper at the Zander Specialty Sod Farm. Also present were13 Black-bellied Plovers, 1 Semipalmated Plover and 4 Least Sandpipers. These birds were at the far northern edge of the property. There was a larger flock of about 40 Least sandpipers on the opposite side of the road from the Zander Farm.
Least Sandpipers were also seen at several other sites in the area. Other sightings included, Northern Harrier, Horned Larks and American Kestrel. To reach this area go north on HWY 400. Take the Bond Head cut off west and drive to the lights in Bond Head. Turn north on Hwy 27 and then left at the next lights onto the Beeton Road going west. In about 5 km take the 15th sideroad north (right) and you will enter a large area of relatively flat farmland. The concession roads around this flat low-lying area lead to numerous sod farms. The Zander specialty sod farm is two concessions north of the Beeton Road on the North side of the 9th concession about one kilometre west off the 15th sideroad John Schmelefske # 7360 RR # 4 Alliston, Ontario,Canada, L9R 1V4 Email: [email protected] Watercolour Gallery: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2001214&id=1051632050&l=ea990bf4ce _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
