As Cheryl indicates below, today was an excellent day at Van Wagners
Beach with the strong east winds. There were at least five Long-tailed
Jaegers seen by 6:00 pm, including lengthy and excellent looks at two
adults late in the afternoon which eventually flew inland over the beach
and out towards Hamilton Harbour. There were also two Parasitic Jaegers
in late afternoon, plus several distant identified jaergers throughout
the day.

There were either three or five juvenile Sabine's Gulls seen during the
day, depending on whether sightings involved the same bird. Three Black
Terns and an early Surf Scoter were also noteworthy.

Subject: [Ontbirds]Long-tailed Jaegers and Sabine's Gulls, Van Wagners
Beach, Hamilton

This morning around 8:45 a.m. two juvenile Long-tailed Jaegers flew by
the Lakeland Tower approximately 1 km out spotted by Brandon Holden.
About 9:45 a.m. Rob Dobos spotted a juv. Sabine's Gull which flew from
east to west at not too far a distance out giving decent looks and at
11:45 a.m. just before I left another juv. Sabine's Gull was seen at a
great distance. Conditions are favourable today, thought there might be
a bit more action this morning but typically afternoons are better for
lighting as well as birds being blown down the lake. Patience and luck!

Cheers,

Cheryl Edgecombe

Directions to Van Wagners Beach: Take the Centennial Parkway (Hwy.20)
exit from the QEW in east Hamilton and proceed north to the North
Service Rd., turn left and continue west as it turns into Van Wagners
Beach Road. Continue to the parking lots at either Hutch's Restaurant or
the Lakeland Centre viewing tower and view the lake anywhere near here.
