Hi Birders,

There were lots of birds at Erieau this morning, but most were gulls and terns. The only notable shorebird was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper in a bare field between the main road (CK Rd. 12) and the R/R track trail. This field is viewed from the R/R track trail.

Not many fields were planted in onion this year, so shorebird habitat is at a premium. The Blenheim Lagoons are still closed, but hopefully will be open in another month for the OFO Convention outing. (Note: the OFO outing to Rondeau October 4 will start 08:30 at the visitor centre, not the main gate!).

There was a spectacle of gulls and terns at the Erieau public beach early this morning before the beach walkers dispersed them. If fact, it was incredible! I estimated 12,000+ gulls and terns on the beach and on the water. Numbers estimated were up to 5000 Common Terns, 4000 Bonaparte's Gulls, 3000 Herring/Ring-billed Gulls and 25+ Caspian Terns. Birds were continually coming from the east. Strangely, I did not see a single uncommon/rare bird among them, but no doubt something was there!

Directions to Erieau: The port of Erieau is located south of Blenheim.
West out of Blenheim on Talbot Trail (Rd. 3), turn left onto (Erieau Rd.)
Rd. 12 and follow to village. The pier area is found by continuing through
the village and turning right at the restaurant intersection. The beach is to the right just before the pier. The R/R track trail is on the left, just past the curve going into the village, opposite McGeachy Pond.
