On Monday, August 31st, Robert Epstein and I were returning from seeing the Black-throated Sparrow at Port Burwell when we stopped at the Hiawatha Race Track in Sarnia. In other years I have seen Golden Plover there but i was dismayed to see that the southern two-thirds of the grass area to the west of the race track parking lot has been converted to a golf driving range. We stopped anyway to check it out. At the northern end of the grassy area, there were small pools of water in the grass that attracted a few shorebirds-- a couple Lesser Yellowlegs, 8 Least Sandpipers, a Semipalmated Sandpiper, and a Red-necked Phalarope. This was at 7:15 p.m. The shorebirds were still present when we left the area.

The race track is visible from 402 but to get there, exit at Airport Road and go south to London Road, then go west about a half mile to the entrance to the race track on the north side of the road. Once on the race track property go to the NW edge of the parking lot.
