Conditions have improved vastly at the Aylmer lagoons in central Elgin
County the last 10 days. Both the second and third ponds have good
water's-edge habitat for shorebirds. This morning there were 200+
individuals of 9 species, mostly Killdeer and Lesser Yellowlegs. The
highlight was 7 Stilt Sandpipers and a single American Golden-Plover.
High water at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area has made for poor
shorebird habitat going back to spring. On most days, a visitor is lucky
to see a Killdeer. However, today and tight flock of 30 Lesser
Yellowlegs landed just as we were leaving. A unbanded Great Egret has
been present for a few days.
