Also, Wayne and Carmen Hudson from Kingsville; Wayne, and Andrew Davis from Kings City; park campers, John and Chris Craft; Jason Telasco from Kingsville; and another couple who never made it to the top tier of the Tower. Weather: Partly to mostly cloudy with East-northeast to Southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph. A warm day with temps. ranging from 20 to 27C. Numerous tall cumulonimbus clouds building throughout the day. Raptor Observations: Another fine day of hawkwatching at Holiday Beach. Today we had our first true, albeit tiny, Broadwing kettle of the season around 10:30 AM, numbering 22 individuals. Only small groups and singles up until noon when the "flight" abruptly ended. Sharpies were coming past consistently all day, as singletons or in small bunches, and wound up on top with 137 in total. Also, a good flight of Kestrels (36) by recent standards, but pales in comparison to the 327 recorded on this date in 1994. Non-raptor Observations: Black-crowned Night-heron, 2 Bald Eagle, 3 locals Shorebirds included Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary (5) and Least Sandpipers, and Wilson's Snipe (3). Am. Herring Gull, 2 juvs. Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 35 Red-headed Woodpecker, 1 juv. (E->W along lakeshore) Least (1) and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (1) Eastern Kingbird, 1 (getting late) Philadelphia Vireo, 2 Purple Martin, 3 Cedar Waxwing, 60 Good flight of warblers dominated by Magnolia (up to 90% of ID'ed species) Purple Finch, 5 (single group) American Goldfinch, 86 Other: Monarch, 95 Predictions: Very similar to today with warm temps., high of 26C, and North- to South-easterly winds at 5 to 10 mph. There may be a light to moderate push of raptors ahead of the advancing front. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Justin Bosler () Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
