Visitors:
A good turnout for the Festival of Hawks today with many visitors to the
Tower including, among others, Richard Guillet, Jim McCoy, Olga and Roland
Klekner, John and Chris Craft, Kathy Evans, Dorothy McLeer, Sarah Rupert,
and the usual HBMO crew.
Weather:
Clear to partly cloudy skies with Northeast winds at 5 to 8 mph up until
about noon. Winds then slacked off slightly before turning to the East and
then becoming East-southeast to Southeast, an onshore flow, at 4 to 7 mph,
for a better part of the PM. Temps. climbed from a cool 10.5C to a
comfortable 21.7C.
Raptor Observations:
A fairly slow day overall after an initial lift off of nearby roosting
Broadwings. The first Red-shouldered Hawk of the fall season casually
moving through late in the 1400 to 1500 (EST) hour.
Non-raptor Observations:
11 species of waterfowl,
Black-crowned Night-heron- 4,
Bald Eagle- about 6 locals,
Shorebirds included Killdeer(6), Greater Yellowlegs(2), Solitary
Sandpiper(2), S-b Dowitcher(1), and Wilson's Snipe(3).
Chimney Swift- 20+,
Ruby-throated Hummingbird- 9,
Blue Jay- 15,800+,
Blue-headed Vireo- 1,
Fair morning flight of warblers. Low diversity on the ground.
Yellow-rumped "Myrtle" Warblers increasing in abundance.
Cedar Waxwing- 105,
Purple Finch- 4,
American Goldfinch- 280,
Other:
Monarch- 50,
Numerous dragonflies today.
Predictions:
Partly cloudy skies with East-northeast to East-southeast winds up to 8
mph. High of 21C. Chance of PM rain showers around 50%. Judging by how slow
things got after the winds switched today, I wouldn't expect much of a
flight to materialize tomorrow. Festival activities continue again tomorrow
and again next Saturday, 26 September.
