Visitors:
Were many today with our Festival wrapping up. We had as many as 20 on the
tower at times. Thanks to all who contributed to spotting the birds today.
Special recognition to Frank Dolby or Interpretive Ornithologist
Weather:
A beautiful fall morning. Sunny (some haze throughout the day), with
partial cloud cover made for very nice skies. Temps ranged from a cool
13.6 C to start, all the way up to 26 C in the afternoon. Winds were light
most of the day, starting out of the E, changed to NE, to E with a
southerly component.
Raptor Observations:
A real treat greated the early birders this morning with an 7am Peregrine
Falcon taking a Blue Jay, and perching near the shoreline for breakfast.
This bird was banded on both legs, R had purple over black, L appeared red.
A total of 4 Peregrines were counted int he first half of the day.
Sharp-shinned hawks and Broad Winged Hawks were the birds of the day. Our
afternoon was graced by 2 fabulous birds in the 2pm to 3pm hour...a
Sub-adult Golden Eagle, and 15 minutes later a Northern Goshawk.
12 Species counted today
Non-raptor Observations:
The Blue Jay highway was going strong most of the day--12,170 logged during
the count time. American Goldfinch had a strong showing of 465 for the
day. We were still seeing Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. A juvenile
Red-headed Woodpecker, and several male Downy Woodpeckers were also seen.
Predictions:
With possible thunderstorms in the forecast Monday could be a quiet bird
day.
