Hello,
Lise and I birded Amherst Island on the KFN property Saturday and Sunday, Although, the shorebirds were never in great numbers, we were able to see 13 species. Among these birds were two White-rumped Sandpipers, one darker bird and a pale coloured one, the later showing signs of moulting to such an extent, that the white area above its tail feather could be noticed. Also, we did see a pair of Bobolinks in non-breeding plumage around the pond on Saturday. Other birds include American Bittern, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Great Blue Heron, and A Virginia Rail. The rail was seen on the south side of the pond. A couple of merlin were keeping the shorebirds on their toes, making regular swoops on them on a regular basis without any success. Cheers, Brian Directions; Amherst Island is approx. 25 minutes west of Kingston and can be reach by ferry from the Loyalist Parkway, which travels to the island on the 1/2 hour and to the mainland on the hour during regular day and evening hours everyday. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
