This morning at 9:30 am, Cheryl Edgecombe and myself found an immature Lark Sparrow at Hamilton's Van Wagners Beach. The bird was found at the beach volleyball court on the east side of the Baranga's Restaurant. It was associating with a number of Chipping Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos and was typically in the short grass between the volloeyball court and Van Wagners Beach Dr. or right in front of the restaurant. A number of birders have been down to see this bird throughout the day and it is still being seen as recently as 2:30 pm.
There has been quite a fallout of passerine migrants along the lakeshore in the area of Van Wagners Beach and Ponds and Confederation Park, with large numbers of sparrows (juncos, White-throated, White-crowned, Chipping, Field), both kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, Eastern Phoebes, Winter Wrens, etc. Directions: To reach Van Wagners Beach, take the Centennial Parkway (Hwy. 20) exit from the QEW in east Hamilton and proceed north to the North Service Rd., turn left and continue west as it turns into Van Wagners Beach Road. Continue about a 100 m past the bend to the first parking lot on the left side opposite Baranga's Restaurant. Park here and look across the road as described above. Cheers, Rob Dobos Dundas, Ont.
