I have just got in from a Nature London,( McIlwraith club previously), trip to
Forest,. Kettle Point and Pinery Provincial Park. It was a very succesful trip
with the birds around Kettle Point Indian Reservation being the highlight. We
saw  6 Avocets on the east side of the point and 3 eagles, (2 adult and
1immature) from the west side. Whilst looking at the Avocets we had great views
of a Little Gull and a Common Tern fishing just in front of us with a flock of
Bonapartes. From the marine dock about 1 km. from the west side of the point we
could see  Black and Surf scoters. A Greater Yellowlegs was also near the
Avocets, and there and at Forest S.L. there were Dunlins.
In the Pinery there were many Hermit thrushes on the roads, with Tufted
Titmouse and Fox Sparrow coming to the feeders. Merlin, Harrier and Yellow-rump
warbler were among the other birds seen.
For anyone who wants to try for the Avocets tomorrow, Kettle Point is between
Port Franks and Forest, off Highway 21, ( Lakeshore Road), which also goes by
the entrance to Pinery P.P. (South of Grand Bend). From #22 take Army Camp road
or Ipperwash road north to L.Huron. Drive west on Parkway Crescent, until  you
see a short road going right to the beach. It is safe to drive on the beach. Go
west towards the row of rocks, which is the point, and look for the Avocets.
