Olga Klekner was out for the afternoon to help spot and enjoy the close Goldens. Weather: Thick fog blanketed the area up through late AM when the fog slowly began to burn off. Otherwise, mostly to partly cloudy skies with East-northeast to East-southeast winds at 1 to 7 mph. Temps. ranged from 13.2 to about 15.5 C. Visibility greatly reduced by fog early on, but improved considerably by mid-PM; very poor to fair. Raptor Observations: A surprising lift off and passage of Turkey Vultures and Red-tailed Hawks between 1100 and 1120 EST as the sun burned through the fog and the winds picked up out of the East-northeast. Flight died down again with returning cloud cover, but this period of inactivity was short lived. Five immature Golden Eagles, two boldly-marked juvenile Northern Goshawks, and a light morph Rough-legged Hawk were the highlights. Non-raptor Observations: 14 species of waterfowl, Double-crested Cormorant- 13 (flyovers), Great Blue Heron- 20+, Great Egret- 6+, Black-crowned Night-Heron- 2 juv. COMMON NIGHTHAWK- 1 (flying out in front of Tower to the E for 2-3 mins. at 1300 EST), Horned Lark- 310, N. Rough-winged Swallow- 1 (foraging around Tower all day; late), Blue Jay- 65, Am. Crow- 3,345, Eastern Bluebird- 7, Am. Pipit- 205, Cedar Waxwing- 105, Am. Tree Sparrow- 1 (FOF), Lapland Longspur- 10, Purple Finch- 12, House Finch- 2, Am. Goldfinch- 375. Other: Monarch- 4-5. Predictions: Overcast skies with rain showers possible. South to southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph. High of 14C. Chance of rain around 70%.
