Today John Schmelefske and I birded the Lake Erie shoreline from Port Stanley
east to Nanticoke in a futile search for the Black-tailed Gull reported this
week.
By far the most gulls were in Port Stanley harbour, including some
Bonaparte's and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, as well as a Horned Grebe.
An adult Bald Eagle was at Port Bruce, 3 were on the ice at Long Point, and
4 ( 2 juv's) were seen at Nanticoke.
In Long Point Bay were several flocks of Tundra Swans, 20 Am. Coots and 2
Pied-billed Grebes. On nearby corn fields were up to 180 Sandhill Cranes.
Other highlights included a Little Gull + 3 Killdeer at Turkey Point, 11
Buff-bellied/American Pipits at Port Ryerse, a large flock of Red-winged
Blackbirds at Nanticoke, 12 Cowbirds, a Peregrine, a Northern Harrier, and a
mixed flock of Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs and Horned Larks near Long
Point.
