Miserable weather today, but some decent birds around.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was along the marsh trail at Erieau, just past the
new viewing platform. Jim Burk and I found it late this morning, only
because we heard the chip notes. It could easily have been missed, and was
hard to see even when we knew it was there. It was just over the edge of
the dyke in the tangles. Needless to say it is a late date.
Also along this trail were at least two COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, Marsh Wren,
Winter Wren, Carolina Wren. Several sparrow species including 2 Fox
Sparrows. A couple of Killdeer are hanging around in the fields.
Rondeau Bay is frozen over except at Erieau where there are quite a few
American Coots, plus Wigeon, Gadwall, etc. A few gulls are around including
a first basic Glaucous.
At Rondeau Park, there are decent flocks of birds from the maintenance yard
and up through the campground. Included are several Yellow-rumped Warblers,
at least two Sapsuckers and a female Evening Grosbeak. The grosbeak has
been hanging around the north end of the campground for a few weeks, but I
finally saw it myself this morning (!).
Directions to Erieau: The port of Erieau is located south of Blenheim.
West out of Blenheim on Talbot Trail (Rd. 3), turn left onto (Erieau Rd.)
Rd. 12 and follow to village. The pier area is found by continuing through
the village and turning right at the restaurant intersection.
The Erieau Marsh Trail (aka railroad track trail) is just past the curve at
the entrance to Erieau. A large sign is there.
