58th Peterborough CBC: Twenty-seven participants located 51 species and 10085 individual birds. The number of species is at the 10 year average of 51 for the count but the number of individuals was above the 10 year average of 8803. Conditions for the count were good with 10cm of snow on the ground, no precipitation on the day, and light winds.
An American Wigeon was a new species for the count and we had record highs fo Wild Turkey (87), Common Raven (5), and White-breasted Nuthatch (95). Records equaled were Pied-billed Grebe (1 in 10 years), Ring-necked Duck (1 in 3 years), Cooper's Hawk (5 in 2 years), Merlin (2 in 5 years), and Red-belied Woodpecker (2 in 2 years). Notable misses included Cedar Waxwing (912 Bohemian Waxwings), Common Redpoll and Pine Siskin. 24th Petroglyphs CBC: Thirteen participants located 26 species and 1519 individual birds. The number of species and the number of individuals were the lowest since 1990, another year with no finches. Conditions for the count were good with 10-15cm of snow on the ground, no precipitation on the day, and light winds. No new species were found, and no records broken, although the second ever Northern Cardinal was found. For the first time ever Downy Woodpecker was missed. Other notable misses were Wild Turkey (seen in count week), Black-backed Woodpecker (seen in the previous 10 years), American Tree Sparrow, Snow Bunting, Common Redpoll, Evening Grosbeak, and House Sparrow. Species found of note were 5 Bald Eagles, 57 Bohemian Waxwings, 1 Pine Grosbeak, and 2 Pine Siskins.
