The 85th Toronto Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, December 20th with
mild -5C to +1C temperatures, very light winds and no snow cover or
precipitation. The count was undertaken by 114 participants and 4 feeder
watchers. A total of 87 species (previous 10 year average = 86) was tallied and
41,284 individual birds (10 year average = 52,551) were counted.
The were no new species for the all-time count list and no unusual species were
found.
Record high counts were recorded for: Trumpeter Swan 16 (surpassing 6 in 2007);
Cooper's Hawk 25 (21 in 2008); Peregrine Falcon 12 (10 in 2005 & 2006); Rock
Pigeon 5,579 (4,683 in 2008); Red-bellied Woodpecker 4 (3 in 5 other years
since 1993); Downy Woodpecker 296 (245 in 2008); Black-capped Chickadee 1,407
(1,294 in 2001); Red-breasted Nuthatch 83 (70 in 2006); White-breasted Nuthatch
313 (224 in 1999); Winter Wren 29 (21 in 2002); Northern Mockingbird 40 (34 in
2006); Northern Cardinal 562 (517 in 2008); and House Sparrow 3,059 (2,834 in
2006).
Some notable species missed on the count were Northern Pintail, Northern
Goshawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Ring-necked Pheasant, Snowy Owl, Northern Saw-whet
Owl and White-crowned Sparrow.
