It was a pretty good week to end the year what with a Barrow's Goldeneye out
the Bath Road and a Boreal Owl in the Owl Woods on Amherst Island. Other owls
noted were 3 N. Saw-whet and 5 Long-eared in the woods, a Snowy at the east end
of the island, a pair of Great Horned Owls calling to the west of the firehall
and close to two dozen Short-eareds over the fields to the south and east of
Stella at dusk. There was also a Barred Owl in the city on Old Front Road on
Monday.

Amherst has a good selection of hawks as well, although they have been more
abundant in years past. Accipiters continue their feeder patrol with a
Sharp-shinned at Camden East and a Cooper's downtown on Wellington Street.
Merlins were seen at Millhaven and Bath and there were 2 Bald Eagles on Amherst
on Wednesday. N. Shrikes were at Wilstead, Barriefied and Amherst Island.

Waterfowl are still in good numbers; the lake hasn't frozen yet and the Dupont
lagoon remains a busy spot. Tundra Swans were on Amherst, at Bath and in
Elevator Bay. Also in Elevator Bay, a Ruddy Duck along with coots, wigeon and
Redheads. The Violet dump still has lots of gulls including a Glaucous on
Tuesday.

In the small bird category, a Song Sparrow, 2 N. Flickers, 4 Brown-headed
Cowbirds and 5 Am. Robins lingered in the Bath/Millhaven area, the Tufted
Tutmice are still in Wilstead and Bath and 4 Snow Buntings made an unusual
visit to a feeder in Bedford Mills.

Happy New Year,

Peter Good
