Birders

This bird was first discovered yesterday morning off the power-plant on the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It was seen by a large number of Michigan birders and photographed. It is the first Michigan record. Today I spent most of the day looking for it and watching it from the Canadian side of the river. I spent 2 hours this AM following it and during that time it stayed in Michigan waters. I relocated the bird this afternoon west of the power plant and watched it from 1415-1445 still in Michigan waters. Subsequently it drifted down to the power-plant and I lost it. I drove down river and encountered the bird again 100m off the back of the Bush Plane Museum unambiguously in Canadian water. It was diving constantly and disappeared after a large lake freighter went by. It seems happy and well despite frigid temperatures and spent most of the time actively diving. Unfortunately I didn't get any IDable pics during its brief forray into Canadian water. A lot of the best waterfowl areas are on the Canadian side so I suspect it is spending some time on this side. I will take another shot at it tomorrow.

The best viewing spot is from the end of East St. Pass by the library and jog to the left before you hit the Art Gallery pull a right into the "Visitors' Parking Lot of the apartment building. Many other suitable spots are present along the river. More details on Mich Listers and UP Birdnet.
