We seem to be in the midwinter doldrums as winter birds have settled into a
routine and very little is happening. There are still good numbers of Bald
Eagles; 1 on Devil Lake, 3 more at Chaffey's Lock and 7 in the Thousand
Islands. At least one Barred Owl remains in Lemoine Pt. and the Tufted Titmouse
and the White-throated Sparrow are still visiting feeders at Wilstead and
Battersea respectively.
The only new development is that there is considerable open water in the
Cataraqui River; this is often where we find the first spring waterfowl but so
far only those ducks that have been around all winter have moved in, along with
a single Mute Swan. Another overwintering Red-bellied Woodpecker was reported
from the Burnt Hills Road, a lone Pine Siskin visited a Camden East feeder with
an increased number of Am. Goldfinches, and a flock of 40 Am. Robins was seen
at Lemoine Pt. An Iceland Gull was with lots of Great Black-backed and Herring
Gulls in the Thousand Islands today and a Carolina Wren was singing just to the
east of the city.
