Dear Ontbirders, Today around 3pm we stopped at Port Credit harbour to look for the Harlequin Ducks. We quickly spotted the male and two females out past the gazebo, as had been recently reported. While I attempted to photograph the trio through my scope, my girlfriend (who is not a birder) asked if that was another Harlequin Duck in front of us. I began to explain that they were a rare sighting on Lake Ontario and that other species are superficially similar, but to my surprise she was pointing to a 1st winter male in the water directly in front of us!
The young male posed long enough for a picture, then flew a short way to the west with a group of Buffleheads. We relocated it shortly along the breakwall to the west where it was still associating with Bufflehead. I would keep an eye out for it if you check the area. Good birding, Kevin Directions: >From the 401, 403, or Gardiner Expy, head south on Hurontario Street. Continue south to the lakeshore in Port Credit, where it becomes St. Lawrence Drive.
