Today I spent 3 hrs. this afternoon surveying the back roads of the
Holland Marsh looking
specifically for Snowy Owls particularly along those roads where they
are frequently seen.
On the west side of Yonge St./Hwy.11 south of Bradford, south of Canal
Rd. and
Pumphouse Rd. I was not able to locate any. At the north end of Bathurst
St. I again found
no Snowy Owls. Finally, in the fields along the west end of the
Ravenshoe Rd.(dead end)
2 were located. Both of them quite white. One was sitting in the
snowless field on the north
side of the road just west of where the snowmobile trail is. The other
was sitting on top of
the far south corner of the long wheeled irrigation equipment on east
side of the long dead
end road from the end of Ravenshoe Rd.
Where the snowmobile trail crosses Ravenshoe Rd. there was a Northern
Shrike.
Other birds of interest seen were 2 Northern Harriers: a female on
Ravenshoe west of
Leslie St. and a male on the 2nd Concession north of Queensville Side Rd.
A male Kestrel was sitting on a roadside wire on Leslie St. south of
Ravenshoe.
A Cooper's Hawk was seen at the Pumphouse Rd. and Canal Rd. junction.
2 Red-tailed Hawks were also seen.
I last saw a Snowy Owl at the north end of Bathurst St. on Thursday (
Feb.18th) at
approx. 5pm. It was sitting on a wire pole far on the west side.
Yesterday, at approx. 4:30pm heading south on Hwy.400 while passing
through the
Holland Marsh Area I spotted a birder with his scope eying a perched
Snowy Owl
on the west side of the highway on the dirt road that parallels the 400.
