Changing winds and warmer temperatures over the past week have brought in a
couple of great finds in the Hamilton Study Area. Yesterday a WESTERN GREBE
was found at the mouth of the Credit River at the east end of Saddington
Park located at the end of Mississauga Road in Mississauga. The bird was
seen throughout the day today although a scope was helpful at times. Also
present at this location were the Harlequin Ducks and Yellow-rumped Warblers
which have wintered here.

South winds are always exciting for the hawk watchers at Beamer Memorial
Conservation Area in Grimsby. Today at about 4:00 p.m., a BLACK VULTURE was
seen over the tower along with a few Turkey Vultures. A couple of hours
later the same or different BLACK VULTURE was seen over Dundas with a flock
of about 25 Turkey Vultures. The birds went to roost on the ridge close to
Wentworth Retirement Home in Dundas. Other birds seen at Beamer this week
include Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, many Red-tailed
Hawks. Rough-legged Hawk, three adult Golden Eagles and two Peregrine
Falcons. Migrating Double-crested Cormorants were also seen going over the
tower on Tuesday.

Up in Salfleet on 10th Road East, Northern Shrike is present north of the
tracks and up to three Eastern Meadowlarks were seen along this stretch of
10th Road East from Ridge to Green Mountain. At a flooded field on Green
Mountain Road at 6th Road East, Wood Duck, American Wigeon and Northern
Pintail were present on Monday. At the quarry pond on Green Mountain
between 10th and 11th Road west, Hooded Mergansers and Ring-necked Ducks
were migrants seen here later in the week.

Down at the lake at the bottom of Fifty Road, King Eiders continue to be
seen in numbers. Red-necked Grebes were also present here in the week.

In the odds and sods, Sandhill Cranes were seen again near Deer Run Crescent
near Brantford. A flock of Wild Turkeys were seen at Fruitland Road and Hwy
8 today. American Woodcock have been reported from Bronte Creek Campground
East at Upper Middle and Bronte Road, from York Road near Hopkins Tract of
the RBG and at Berry Tract. A growing number of Lapland Longspurs (19) were
seen on Fallsview Road today just north and west of Dundas in Flamborough.
A keen observer looking out for that Black Vulture saw a Common Raven go
over the yard on 5th Concession West near Middletown Road this evening. A
Great Horned Owl passed over the QEW at Bronte Road last evening.

That's the news for this week, tomorrow should be a good day for looking for
more south wind riders. Please be sure to post and report your sightings to
me.
